DELEGATION FROM UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY VISIT BRUNEI

December 4, 2007

Earlier this week, a six member delegation led by the President of Upper Iowa University visited Brunei in an effort to learn more about the educational needs of Bruneian students and explore possibilities of joint academic ventures with the Ministry of Education and national Universities UBD and UNISSA. On Monday (Dec 3) the delegation met with Hajah Norjum (Deputy Permanent Secretary, MOE) followed by a meeting at UNISSA with Pg. Dato Dr. Hj Mohammad (Acting Minister of Education and Rector of UNISSA). On Tuesday morning, the delegation presented information to a group of officers at MOE from the scholarship unit, accreditation council and representatives of Form 6 schools. Before finally departing, the delegation also met with faculty members at Universiti Brunei Darussalam including the Acting Registrar and Secretary Haji Jalil bin Haji Mail and Director of the International Office Datin Rosnah Ramly.

Upper Iowa University is celebrating its 150th year anniversary. The delegation led by President of the University Dr. Alan G. Walker also included Senior Vice President for International Program Dr. DeWayne P. Frazier, Senior Vice President for Financial Service Mr. Don Aungst, Faculty Representative Dr. Nigel George, Executive Director for International Programs Mr. Christopher Sanders and the Director for Asian Studies Mr. Edwin Tan.

UIU President Dr. Alan Walker said “The Brunei higher education system has made great strides since independence and UIU believes we can assist in helping bring quality United States liberal arts education to the country. We are also committed to bringing Brunei students to study at Upper Iowa University in United States. We see great potential of partnerships in Brunei. We know the students to be hard working, diligent and dedicated to excellence.”

The members of the Upper Iowa University delegation were impressed to learn about the academic skills of Bruneian students and announced the intention to offer merit based academic scholarships for a group of Bruneian studen its to study at the Upper Iowa University campus in Fayette, Iowa, for the next academic year which commences August 2008. Upper Iowa University is keen to continue working with the Brunei and U.S.Governments to help meet the academic needs of the Bruneian students.
