Local journalist to participate in International Visitor Leadership Program in the U.S

September 26, 2008

U.S. Ambassador William Todd recently congratulated local Borneo Bulletin journalist Azaraimy Haji Hasib who will be participating in the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).  In early October, Mr. Hasib will be leaving for the United States to attend the ‘Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists.” The three-week program brings together journalists from throughout the world.

Ambassador Todd comments “I am thrilled to see a young and hard working journalist, such as Azaraimy, selected for our IVLP program.  I know this will be a great opportunity for him to observe the United States free press and gain first-hand insights into our social, economic and political system.”

Background on the E.R. Murrow Program

The program will begin in Washington D.C with an overview of the U.S. Government. Participants will travel to other cities addressing particular themes and topics. They will also attend seminars at leading journalism schools. During the final portion of the Murrow program, participants will return to D.C. for an International symposium for Journalists.  The theme will be “Challenges facing media professionals in the U.S. and around the world.” Throughout the program, participants will also have an opportunity to visit cultural events and experience hospitality in the homes of American families.

The IVLP program is an all expense paid trip supported by the U.S. Department of State.  Participants on the program are nominated through the U.S. Embassy in Brunei. Previous participants to the program include Muhamad Khairul Anwar of Borneo Bulletin and Khairunnisa binti Haji Ibrahim of The Brunei Times.

The program is named after a distinguished and renowned figure in the history of American broadcast journalism. Edward Murrow was a seminal force in the creation and development of electronic newsgathering as both a craft and a profession.
