U.S. Congratulates Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia on signing HOB declaration

On February 12 in Bali, The governments of Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia signed a declaration on the Heart of Borneo initiative to work together to protect the unique rainforests of Borneo. The United States applauds the visions of the three Governments in signing a declaration pledging to work together to establish a network of protected areas and to ensure the conservation and effective management of forest resources in the Heart of Borneo region.  The 220,000 square kilometer area shared by the three countries holds a treasure of vibrant tropical rainforest that is home to a vast array of unique flora and fauna.

U.S. Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Emil Skodon said “The U.S. congratulates the Government of Brunei for signing the Heart of Borneo Declaration, which was endorsed by His Majesty the Sultan during the recent ASEAN Summit in Cebu.  The decision to sign the declaration shows the depth of Brunei’s commitment to responsible management of its natural resources.  The United States is proud to have already provided support for the Heart of Borneo initiative and hopes to continue its support in the future.” more
