DVC on Graduate Study in the U.S.
March 24 - More than a dozen Bruneians mostly academics joined in the hour long informal and lively discussion on Graduate Study in the U.S., held at the U.S. Embassy. Fulbright fellow Zul Fakhri Maidy, a student at University of Missiouri candidly discusssed graduate education in the U.S, offering practical advice on a wide array of questions that were posed to him. Topics of the questions that were raised during the hour long session include: Where,How to begin searching for a school/program, living expenses (in Missouri), work rights, teaching assitanships, social life in a mid-west town such as Missouri, internship opportunity, if the speaker faced any religious or other form of discrimation during his stay, possibility of brining family members to the U.S., and education opportunities for their young children.
At the conclusion of the DVC session, Post's ARSO -Chad Hill gave a brief presentation on distance learning/classes (he currently is in IT Mgmt at Univ of Tennessee), which led to a lot of discussion/questions as well. Chad offered personal insights on why he choose the option, its flexibility. There was about an hour worth of follow on discussions with Chad, Shova Thapa (PD Assistant) and Deputy Chief of Mission, John McIntyre. Invited guests also took the opportunity to review and take home some University brochures and publications (If you want to study in the U.S. Book II)
