SPEECHES

CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE
by U.S. Ambassador Emil Skodon
Event: 40th Anniversary of His Mejesty the Sultan's accession to the throne.(As recorded on Pilihan FM)

This is Ambassador Emil Skodon, Ambassador of the United States of America to Brunei.

On behalf of President Bush and the American people, it is a pleasure for me to offer His Majesty, the Sultan and Yang di Pertuan, our greetings on the fortieth anniversary of his accession to the throne.

During His Majesty's long reign, Brunei has achieved full independence, benefited from extensive economic development, and become an active member of the international community through its participation in such forums as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, ASEAN, and APEC.  The U. S. has appreciated the constructive stances that Brunei has taken under his leadership, including on such issues as regional security and the struggle against terrorism, and more recently as regards environmental protection and other emerging challenges.  We look forward to a continuing partnership with His Majesty and with Brunei's government as we work together to address the complex problems of the 21st century, in order to ensure a safer and more prosperous future for the people of both our countries.

Congratulations once again, Your Majesty, from the United States of America.  As you mark your fortieth year on the throne of Brunei Darussalam, please accept our best wishes for continued health and good fortune
