SPEECHES
EID GREETINGS
by U.S. Ambassador Emil Skodon
Event: 2005 Hari Raya Aidilfitri (As recorded on Kristal FM)
This is Ambassador Emil Skodon.
As Ambassador of the United States of America to Negara Brunei Darussalam, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of President Bush and the people of the United States of America to express our warm wishes for the festive season of Hari Raya to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang di Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam.
The spirit behind this holiday reminds us that Islam brings hope and comfort to millions of people in my country, the United States, and to more than a billion people worldwide. Ramadan is an occasion to remember that Islam gave birth to a rich civilization of learning that has benefited all mankind.
Ramadan is also a time for Muslims around the world to stretch out a hand of mercy and to help those who need assistance most. The people of the United States have been particularly touched by the generosity of the people of Brunei towards those in need during this holiday season. We are deeply grateful to His Majesty and to all Bruneians for the support, aid, and comfort you have extended to the American victims of Hurricane Katrina. On behalf of all Americans, I want to express heartfelt appreciation for your assistance and your expressions of concern.
During this joyful season, I hope that people of all faiths can reflect on our shared values. By working together to advance peace and mutual understanding, we help to build a future full of promise and compassion for all.
It is indeed a great privilege to be able to observe this auspicious festival here in Brunei, and I look forward to greeting Bruneians during the Hari Raya celebrations. My wife Thea and I would like to wish everyone:
"Salamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri"
Thank you.
